Is the Celtic cross specifically Catholic?
I have an Irish ancestry and was interested in getting a Celtic tattoo, more specifically a Celtic cross.
My only question is, is the Celtic cross a Catholic symbol? Because I’m not Catholic. I’m a Christian… but not Catholic.
Does it matter if I’m not Catholic and get it anyway?
No, it’s not Catholic in origin. Originally, it is thought that the Celtic cross was more like a plus sign with a circle- with both staves being of equal length. Originally, it was a celtic sun symbol, and eventually the Christians took it over. I wouldn’t worry so much about the symbol’s origins so much as what it means to you. If you like it and are drawn to it, use it.
