Even if a tattoo design is more “generic” or common, does that necessarily mean it doesn’t have meaning

I notice often (and especially on these answers) that people tend to separate tattoos into 2 categories – ones with meaning and ones without and give very negative connotation to tattoos that seem more “general” in their design and don’t have a specific meaning. However, just because someone has a butterfly or a rose tattooed on their body doesn’t mean it doesn’t mean something to them. Right?

Personally, I have a tattoo of a pixie on my left shoulder that I got during a time in my life when I felt really alone. I love fairy tales and wanted someone to “watch over me” as I grew as a person. She is nude but hiding herself because I was struggling with issues of my own sexuality. However, she is playful and mischievous which is like the hidden side of me that only sometimes shows.

I know most people probably think my tattoo was just picked at random cuz I thought it was cute but I put lots of thought into it. Why does there have to be such a distinction?

Even really unique tattoos don’t have to mean anything. A tattoo in general doesn’t have to and shouldn’t “have to” have meaning.

I’ve found that in the last five years, there has become this obsession with justifying tattoos with meanings or whatever. There can be a reason you get it, but I fail to see the symbolism behind half the tattoos I see.

In the end, we all get tattoos for one reason above all else: because we want them. Nobody is forcefully telling anyone (with a couple notable exceptions) to get a tattoo – it is a personal decision that doesn’t need to have an explanation.

I don’t care if someone picked a design off the wall or if they’ve been slaving over their own unique idea for years – it all boils down to wanting a tattoo, and getting what you want.

Who gives a crap if people look down on tattoos without meaning? Just get what you want, and ignore the people who need to justify everything.

Body Art- Tattoo Designs for Every Man and Woman

Tattoos along with many forms of body art have been around for hundreds, even thousands of years. Back then, they were symbols of art, tribe identification and held other deeper and personal significance. In today’s age, the tribal association may not be the primary goal for your ink. But, tattoos are still highly regarded as art and have very personal meaning to its wearer.

When picking your ink, it’s important to know where you are going to get your tattoo, what it means to you and its design details. And of course, don’t forget to do your homework and research local tattoo artists. Go into their shops or their websites if they have one and check out their portfolio of work. You don’t want just anyone branding you for the rest of your life and they do a bad job. Who needs expensive removal surgery?

There are so many tattoos to get from letters, black & white designs, Celtic, animals, tribal, religious, pixies, flowers, dragons, skulls, Japanese text, romantic, mystical  nautical and just about everything in between.  You can find tattoo designs for women and men alike. The possibilities are endless.

No matter what you get, make sure to know it looks good on you and make sure it means something symbolic to you. Remember, your tattoos are part of your exterior an internal image, what will you tell about yourself?

Cute sleeve tattoo ideas?

I want to design a sleeve tattoo to add to my portfolio. I want some ideas for cute images I could include in it. So far I have:
*Hawaiin Flowers
*Strawberries
*Cupcakes and Candy (Pixie Acia style)

But I’m stuck for other ideas. It has to be cute and colourful, as most of my portfoilio pics are black and white. Thanks :)

hummingbirds
hearts
stars
peace signs
cherry blossoms
fairies
butterflies, ladybugs, bumble bees, dragonflies, etc. flying around the flowers you use
rainbows
clouds and the sun
teddy bears
……
i cant think of anything else. good luck :)
