Is there a reason that an ‘organ donor’ tattoo would be a bad? What other information might be helpful?
I am particularly interested to hear from anyone involved with paramedics/emergency medicine/surgery/transplant teams:
Organ donation is something I feel very strongly about. I’m registered and I’ve told my family, but I worry about what would happen happen if I were separated from my driving license in an accident, or my next of kin were to forget about my wishes. I’m considering getting a tattoo identifying me as a donor for any needed organs or tissues. I know a tattoo is not a legally binding document, but it could still be a useful reminder. Is there any reason that such a tattoo might disqualify me from organ donation? Any other reason why it might be a bad idea?
I had thought about getting it on or around my wrist, like a medic alert bracelet – is there a location that would be more noticeable to medical workers? Is there any information that would be helpful in addition to donor status? Maybe blood type?

First, you are to be commended for your selfless determination to be an organ donor. So many people die from organ failure – moms,dads, kids. A tattoo could be viewed as a risk for a recipient because of the risk of hepatitis. You are right about next of kin — they can forget in the heat and grief of the moment. Also, they can stop a donation in a heartbeat even if they know your wish. If you are without written wishes, the medical staff will follow the wishes of the family. If you decide on a tattoo – put it where it will be seen and date it. “FULL ORGAN DONOR – 7/1/07″
That tells the medical team without much question that you do wish to donate and when the decision (and tattoo) was made. The donated organ(s) are thoroughly tested for disease as well as compatibility. BUT – the family can stop the donation so make sure they know exactly what you want. The tattoo will give the medical team grounds to argue a bit.

Well blood type etc is not something you need tattooed – it’s irrelevant as no hospital will give you anything other then O neg crossmatched blood in an emergency. Type specific blood will never be given until a blood type and crossmatch is performed no matter what your records or tattoos say.
As for organ donation – you should make sure your family is aware of your wishes because in that situation, it will be them making the final decision. If you were to become an organ donor there would be plenty of time for blood and tissue typing so it’s also unnecessary to have this information on you. Some countries have organ donor status on driving licenses and if not you can carry an organ donor card in your wallet.
Tattoos will not prevent organ or blood donation as long as they are over 6 months old.
As for allergies you can get a medic alert bracelet but a tattoo would be an ok alternative. The only problem is that doctors and ambulance officers know what the medic alert bracelet looks like and will look for it whereas tattoos are not a very common way of displaying the information so unless it is somewhere it can’t be missed you run the risk of it not even being read.
